I think it's a hybrid.
Exactly. Money is made from advertising and e-commerce, and money is made from the connection to the network. So far neither one has shown that it can carry the entire burden. Those who are trying only one revenue source are still around only because they have deep pockets who have been bleeding red for a long time now, and will soon decide they no longer want to bleed. I mean, do you really think Alta Vista can afford to keep paying for nationwide phone lines, modems, and servers when advertisers wake up to the fact that a simple duct tape can block out the ads, and all one has to do is periodically click somewhere without even looking and get more free phone service? And those who are only trying to make it with monthly fees, well, most of them are no longer around. Remember the old BBS's?
