Global Player from Real Networks looks impressive. I was just in the Vancouver office of Global Media Corporation and looked at a demo of the Global Player to be released at the end of the month. The Global Player was explained to me as an early release of Real Networks most advanced software built in cooperation with Global Media to meet the demands of Global Media's network radio associates. The key feature is that while a song is being played the internet listener will view content on the artist and have a "buy now" flag before him to make an immediate purchase. With a click of the mouse the listener will also be able to view the contents of the CD from which the song originates. A menu includes a storefront from which other Global Media entertainment products can be purchased. Likely GLMC will announce at the NAB Convention (end of August) a significant number of network associates as under contract and using the Global Player. Seems like this will be a significant announcement for Real Networks as well, and suggest both will be promoting the product to other broadcasters.
