CNBC's Mark Haines just interviewed an M&A expert and a head honcho from International Data Corp. The consensus was that the market had just discounted Ascend to reflect the fact that the deal will be dilutive for up to a year. Since the market deals with the here and now (at least the traders) this is an understandable adjustment is what they were saying. Long term they agreed that productwise this is a great fit - with the 2 companies bracketing CSCO's market.

However at least one guy said that 3 other networking companies haven't been heard from yet - Lucent, Nortel and IBM. Also thast the technologies are developing rapidly and that new, small companies will continue to hatch great new products - so the process of such companies being bought up by the larger will continue as the majors strive to keep their edge.

Could a Lucent or IBM make a tender for the ASND/CSCC combo at some point? Quite possible since that's the quickest way for them to get to the leading edge of the infrastructure products, IMO, but that's down the road a ways, I think.
