History teaches us the following things about speculative manias, like the current one for Internet stocks. (1) All of them eventually collapse and collapse hard. Unfortunately, it is not easy to predict when the end will occur or what will cause the end of the mania. (2) There are 2 things vital to sustaining a mania. One of them is that those who are involved with the mania need to keep believing, as a group, in the mania. The other thing that is needed is a steady stream of new investors. One thing I have been trying to do with my friends and family is point out how overpriced Internet stocks are, so they won't take unnecessary risks with their money.
