I think your speculation about Kubrick identifying with the costume owner is interesting, the showiness of it, and the slyness....A problem that people are having is with the surreal aspects of the film, which are not signaled in the manner of a Bunuel film, but are in the accretion of odd details, like the store owner being so little disgruntled at being disturbed, or the daughter popping up with the Japanese in such a "locked down" shop, or the phone call coming before Cruise can sleep with the prostitute. These are all part of the dream- likeness of his experiences, the experience of the psychological turmoil occasioned by his wife's revelation.....
