your mention of the ConEd y2k related 'mishap' in the following quote of yours reminds me of a certain Y2k chat room conversation that took place after ConEd's first public y2k 'town meeting' about 9 months ago, and was related by a customer who attended and then posted in my presence. That conversational jist is given below your lifted quote:

City officials remained skeptical of ComEd's future performance. The officials, who have worked closely with ComEd in preparation for potential Y2K problems, on Friday summoned ComEd officials to a meeting next week to review details of the utility's compliance.

In June, ComEd announced that it had completed its $32 million Y2K program...
chicagotribune.com;

my above referenced chat-mate mentioned 3 things sticking in her mind as the result of attending that public town meeting held by ConEd in her NY/Canadian bordering town. she submitted her contribution/recollections morning after said public meeting.

first off, she remembered the meeting opened with the C/E brass asking how many in the room had bought generators in preparation for Y2K. She said she was among the half dozen or so in a room of 400 plus people who held up their hands.

the C/E officials at the headtable proceeded to guffaw at the expense of the prudent and crack jokes about them. (real good p.r. tactics)

the second thing she remembered was that C/E defined their y2k fix it approach as attacking "mission critical systems." C/E defined 2. Billing, and telephoneless communications with lineman/women in the field doing repairs.

i recall someone wrote back and dryly inquired of that poor soul how much heat would she be able to 'generate' buring that timely billing statment, stuffers and glassene fronted envelope would provide in January's electrical grid failure. :)

since i don't suppose it cost C/E that much for low-tech equipping of linepersonnel with tin cans and strings, evidently accounting "repairs" makes up a considerable portion of C/E's $32 Million expenditure.

i mean, afterall, we all know that there are NO imbedded chips in transformers on the poles, right?
