The only thing I had to read in that article was the fact that these Chinese leaders were actually ASKING American leaders what our response would be.

But your analysis is very sound as well with regard to those islands being expendable pawns in the grander chess game. But they are heavily armed pawns and the battle will likely be very bloody.

I sure am glad I'm not one of those Taiwanese grunts stationed on that island.... <gulp>
