If you don't know how to short a stock, learn first on a less dangerous stock than CIEN. If you insist on learning with CIEN, then you can short a stock with any broker (including on-line brokers). It costs the same as buying a stock. You have to have a margin account. You can short a stock for any time period you want. Here is how it works.

There are 4 million shares outstanding on this stock so this is the maximum amount that can be shorted.

The stock is borrowed from people that have bought CIEN on margin. Stock in CASH accounts can not be shorted.

I just saw where CIEN has 500,000 shares shorted (IB Daily last week).

Call up your broker and say you want to short X shares of CIEN. The shares may or may not be available for shorting. If it is, then he can fill your order on the next uptick on the stock (stocks can not be shorted on the downtick).

As far as a candidate, I am more and more convinced this is a $5 stock at best. Earnings are estimated to rise only 28% this next quarter, for a stock trading at 100X trailing earnings is unbelievably overprised. This stock will be killed if it comes up short on it's next earnings report.
