On further thinking, I believe we should only support draft legislation which requires that the sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of all members of Congress (and of the President) be inducted and serve in regular military Units (not the National Guard), if of age and physically able. Then we will have our assurance that a draft will be fair, necessary and uncontroversial.

Whatever we think of the Kings and warriors of olden days, when they rode into battle with their troops and stood an equal chance of being wounded or killed, no one could question the fairness of the leader's decisions or the process which led them into battle. We can't send a modern-day President onto the battlefield, but why allow his children or grandchildren to weasel out?
