From what little I have read, it seems that most of the selling occurs between August and October of each year.

August is generally a quiet month when many traders are away on vacation. So I guess some interested parties would like to stimulate some action by posting scary news. Selling off generally tends to be most active in October, the traditional tax-loss selling month. So a downturn in the market is to be expected at this time of the year.

Some "experts" claim one always has to be careful a few days left and right of the Autumn Equinox (Sept 20-22nd). I don't have enough experience to say whether this is credible.
