How you doing TD? I don't know all of the details. Maybe somebody could fill in the gaps. But I do know that her main competitor was Ralph Waite,(Pa Walton, the actor). No I'm not kidding. Don't forget California had a Governor who was an actor, who later became President. I'm not sure who the replacement would have been until she was elected. And since I haven't lived there in quite a few years, I don't know what the general consensus of voters is concerning her motives.
My personal feeling is that in the beginning, she was only trying to finish the job her husband had started, since before he died, she seemed content to stay in the background having babies, etc. But when the campaign wagon got rolling she spent as much time as possible trying to get elected. Which she did. There was concern expressed by some that she was disregarding her children, who had just lost their father, and now their mother was too busy on the campaign trail for them. So, maybe she wasn't Betty Crocker after all. I don't mean that in a bad way. I actually think that she threw herself into it full force to carry on his work and to keep her composure, in the beginning any way. But being away from her children so much of the time when they needed a parent so much, does make me wonder. I'm sure Sonny made provisions for her and the children so she didn't need a job. I wonder how she's doing on the job. But I also wonder how the kids are holding up. C Kahn
