Apropos your comments about the effect AIDS and TB will have on African mining personnel, BHP recently sold out its holding (51%?) in the Hartley platinum project in Zimbabwe for $3 million - and, from memory BHP had spent something like $700 million on the project. One report stated that BHP had come to the conclusion that AIDS and other illness amongst the workforce would mean that the mine would never be profitable. BHP were relying (and were required by the Zimbabwe Government) to use mainly local labour - and the costs of retraining the workers was heavy, and was going to increase.
