Michael, the Greenpeace protesters against nuclear weapons believe very strongly that nuclear weapons may well destroy most of the life on this planet. It is not a position which everyone on earth holds, but it is certainly an idealistic and logical one, and one worth fighting for. The pollution from nuclear energy is definitely causing disease and death and ruining the ecology of several oceans in Europe, where most Greenpeace activists come from, so they have understandably strong feelings about this issue.

There is a belief among many environmentalists and anti-nuclear people that if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. This, too, can be seen as logical, because it is only by wide social protest that something like the nuclear industry will come to be so unpopular that it is outlawed. These are not just radical fringe ideas--the country of New Zealand is a nuclear free zone, for example.

Hopefully, yelling at 20-year-old soldiers may cause a few of them to rethink their dedication to a military based on nuclear weapons. Certainly yelling is a fairly nonviolent way of social protest, much less violent than the death and injury of Greenpeace members at the hands of the French Army several years ago.

Are you taking the position that there is no freedom of speech for nonviolent protesters? Isn't freedom of speech one of the ideals our proud American military protects?
