I disagree with the author about corporate farming, which is simply more efficient, nor do I think that we can over- ride the responsibility of national governments to provide for their citizens, unless we are willing to becoming a truly imperial power. Finally, I do not think that it is global capitalism which is the main culprit in the problems of food distribution. That said, I agree that the reason for famine is not a lack of food, but an inadequate system of distribution, and that governmental and international agencies, including NGOs, can contribute to the broad distribution of staples before crises are reached. However, it must be noted that the primary problem at the end of the twentieth century is the misdirection of foreign aid dollars by tyrannical governments, and the use of food as a weapon in domestic oppression....In the Sudan, for example, famine was used as a means of quelling a rebellion, and international agencies were actively interfered with.... |
