Of course I would say so. I am totally in line with what you said about respect anyway. However, as Charles tells us, there seems to be a way to read Gustave as rather pro-American and anti-Euro. This would agree with what I have read from Gustave before introducing him to you.
It is not that that alone should heal all your mutual difficulties. But it may be that I wasn't too wrong about some of the special passages you criticised.

BTW (truedog is right, for me, that I learned British English at school; and met more British than Americans): what does it mean in American English if somebody is 'p*ss*d off' ? Is it 'angry' ? or 'has run away' ? 'on dope' ? or ... what ?
