APPLIED MICROSYSTEMS CORP (APMC) 5 3/4 -6. These shares have lost 51% of their value on news the company will report extremely disappointing 1st qtr results. Citing weak sales and the impact of foreign-exchange translations, the developer of hardware-assisted software tools for the design, debugging and testing of embedded software forecast 1st qtr bottom-line results of breakeven to as much as a $0.07 a share loss, well below the $0.15 a share Wall Street analysts were anticipating. The company's forecast of $8.5 to $9 million in revenue also puts top-line growth well below analysts' views of approximately $11 million, as much as a 23% shortfall. The company said its lower revenue estimates reflect longer than anticipated quarter-ending sales cycles and unfavorable currency exchange rate fluctuations, especially as it relates to a weakening Japanese yen compared with the U.S. dollar. In the year-ago 1st qtr, Applied Micro reported earnings of $0.10 a share on revenues of $8.7 million. Shocked by the revelation that the company will miss its numbers, and on a sequential decline in revenues, Hambrecht & Quist has downgraded its investment rating on the stock to a "hold" from a previous rating of "buy," sending the issue tumbling through its previous one-year low of $9 a share.
