Answers to Divit' question, isn't there any other headend system that they can't use to test interoperability?
DiviCom Teams With Technology Leaders to Deliver Cable Interoperability
Competitive Solutions Will Offer Greater Choice for Consumers, Cable Operators
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 1999--DiviCom©, a C-Cube (Nasdaq:CUBE - news) subsidiary and the world's leading provider of open solutions for digital television, today announced the successful interoperability testing with a prototype point of deployment module (POD).

The OpenCable(TM) interoperability testing, sponsored by CableLabs©, provided vendors with a proving ground for interoperability technologies including the POD Module, and OpenCable network interfaces.

``DiviCom has been a strong supporter of OpenCable interoperability, with its inherent advantages to cable operators and customers alike,' DiviCom President Tom Lookabaugh said. ``Interoperability may one day give consumers the freedom to buy digital set-top boxes and integrated digital televisions at electronics retail stores.'

For cable service providers, POD interoperability encourages competition and innovation among conditional access vendors, giving cable operators the flexibility to select the best technology. Competition would also free providers from long-term commitments to proprietary technology that may soon be rendered obsolete.

Anchoring the demonstration was DiviCom's head-end system (encoders, multiplexers and system controllers), and SCM Microsystem's POD module. Several conditional access vendors, including Mindport, NagraVision, NDS and Philips, also took part in the demonstration, which provided vendors with a venue for achieving and verifying the effectiveness of interoperability.

Participating vendors were selected based on product readiness. Those with a prototype or actual product to test were invited to send engineers and the test equipment to CableLabs, then allowed to use its facilities both to validate the test plan and demonstrate the multi-vendor interoperability of their OpenCable devices.

In 1997, CableLabs (www.opencable.com) and its members established ``OpenCable,' a project aimed at spawning a new generation of interoperable set-top boxes. Based on point of deployment modules, these new devices promise to provide cable customers with a new range of interactive services. The open specifications project is patterned after the industry's successful Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) process that continues within CableLabs.
