August 09, 1999, Issue: 747 Section: FrontEnd -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transpoint: Revisionist History? Ashlee Vance
Now that its service for paying bills over the Internet is off the ground-through partnerships with Con Edison, GTE, Xerox, and other companies-only time will tell if TransPoint, the Microsoft-First Data Corp. joint venture, can rewrite the way businesses and individuals meet their monthly obligations the way it has rewritten some of its news releases.
Many of the archived news releases on TransPoint's Web site (www.transpoint.com) have been rewritten to eliminate any mention of the original launch dates predicted for the service. A release from Dec. 3, 1997, for example, now gives the target date as "in 1999," even though it originally said "mid-1998."
