He was serious about reforming language, but not that way!

I assume you once read '1984' by George Orwell. 'newspeak' was designed on the plans Churchill had propagated. The main ideas were reduction of semantic abundance and introduction of a more systematic orthography, based on the words' phonology instead of of its' history (etymology). The 'ghoti'-fish explains the crux of the etymologic principle, especially for an ecclectic language like English.

In German we have had the first 'major' orthography reform this time last year since more than 75 years, and only last week (most of) the papers started using the new forms. Since the planning phase was so long (around 35 years, with beginnings right after the last reform), the direction of the reform was opposed to what would have been reasonable today: many words borrowed from other languages are now spelt according to their (German) phonology instead of keeping their foreign spelling. Nowadays, during internationalisation of individual work and globalisation of economy, the opposite change should have been made.

Thanks for advice, regards MNI.
