Observations from a developer: both Apple/MOT and INTC have chips in proof that achieve 400 mhz and greater speeds. With new graphics boards and dvd on the horizon your ordinary computer is going to be very different from what it is now -- an entertainment and home netcasting center, if you like, a smart high definition TV, a video conferencing center, an appliance control device, a bank etc.

I see INTC's ability to reinvent itself more or less unlimited as its products merge increasingly with ordinary consumer electronics. That was the kernel of truth I perceived at their New York show recently (i.e. their claim not to be "just" a semi manufacturer.)

Consumer resistance comes principally as a result of INTC ineptly collapsing product cycles (i.e. shooting themselves in the foot).

And only INTC can single handedly determine many of the new markets. Like it or not, you cannot ignore their technical specs.

Much the same is true of MSFT. Watch the UNIX/NT 4.0 battle in the next year. Watch NT move into the OS2 arena. Some test, but I have no doubt who will win. Watch the MSFT/NSCP battle; the network/Java approach and the WindowsOS/network approach. I wouldn't bet against MSFT or INTC on any of these fronts. In other words they are our era's new monopolies.
