LUCENT TO ACQUIRE XEDIA FOR $246 MILLION Lucent Technologies will acquire Xedia Corp., a privately held developer of Internet access routers, for about $246 million in stock. Lucent said the acquisition would enhance its portfolio at the edge of network as a solution for corporate IP VPNs. Xedia's network access routers feature a Class Based Queuing (CBQ) technology that classifies network traffic at the IP layer based on a hierarchy of IP addresses, IP protocols, and port IDs. The system is capable managing bandwidth allocation based on Layer 3, Layer 4 (http, ftp, telnet, etc.) and Layer 7 (URL) information. Last November, UUNET introduced an Access Optimization Service (AOS) that uses Xedia Corporation's Access Point router equipment to monitor and prioritize Internet access connections. Xedia has also signed deals with Concentric Network, Sprint and PSInet. The company was founded in 1993 and received financial backing from Norwest Venture Capital, AT&T Ventures and Greylock. Xedia is based in Acton, MA and has about 90 employees.

These WAN - monitoring and trafic shaping's companies must have a BIG marked to get into, when we think abouth the number of companies that today have no services from their PTT's. I am currently making a matrix on the different companies, but it sure look like there is room for a lot of them.
