First, just because they asserted the right that way doesn't mean that's the only way to assert the right. And frankly I don't think history supports the premise that England "evince[d] a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism."

And without wanting to open the merits or nonmerits of the abortion debate here, I do think that for many people the denial of the right of the people of a state to declare whether abortion shall be legal or illegal in that state is of sufficient moment to justify secesion. For many people, this is a moral issue just as important as slavery was to some in the 1860s, and probably more important than taxation was in the 1770s. Let's not forget that there were MANY Americans who strongly opposed the secession from England. This was by no means a unanimous demand of all the residents of the country. Many were quite happy under British rule. Some hotheads weren't <g>, and they were willing to become terrorists and freedom fighters to make their point.
