But who defines that? How does one know when one is in such a moment? We have to live in the present and make decisions in the present; we don't have the luxury of sitting back a hundred years later and debating our acts.

From the point of view of the South, the economic dominance that the North was exerting, plus the power grab by the federalists who even then were dominating over the states rights advocates, plus the actions of abolitionists in the North trying to destroy slavery, stealing property (as it was legally then, however much we deplore the whole institution of slavery today) and "liberating" it, and all the rest certainly constitued "extraordinary circumstances."

Where are the historians on this thread when we need them??
