That would be shorting the right stock. But if you do well in your stock selection, shorting can enhance returns and help flatten out volatility in your port. Just because the market rallies doesn't mean that all stocks go up. Despite the monster rally Friday, my best two percentage gains were shorts. One company declared bankruptcy and was (and still is) halted from trading. I took a 50% return on that stock last week from the short side, as it suddenly dawned on the market what was obvious to anyone who bothered to look at their balance sheet. I actually find it easier to find good shorts than good longs. Despite what some folks claim, one can't cause a stock to fall just by posting lies on Internet opinion threads. I believe that folks believe this because it's easier than admitting that they missed something in their stock selection. There are actually a lot more people trying to talk bad stocks up than good stocks down. Yes, a well disseminated lie can cause a minor blip on the chart, but in the fullness of time, fundamentals will always win.
