That our national government is a federal government is beyond debate. The thorny intricacies of where the powers of the federal government begin and leave off, likewise the powers of the state governments, shall always be subject to debate. It is beyond debate that some powers are only federal, e.g., the power to wage war, or to regulate interstate commerce. If you think that the federal government has always thought that it had the power to regulate, say, domestic relations between spouses or between parent and child, then you need to brush up on your history.
