In November, Sanyo Electric {6764} will begin supplying samples of a chipset for satellite broadcast set top boxes which allows decoding of digital signals. Mass production is slated to start next June at 10,000/month. The set is based on IBM chips and will provide higher-quality images than those from regular satellite broadcasts. The set consists of the direct down converter LA7788V (samples 800 yen), the block demodulator LC74100E (5,000 yen), the audio decoder LC85800E (5,000 yen), the video decoder LC74150E (8,000 yen), and a microprocessor which incorporates an optical signal controller dubbed the LC74180E (no price provided). The 74150 and the 74180 are based on IBM's Power PC 401. The chipset offers a wide range in automatic gain control. The image size is 720 x 840 pixels.
