RE: Cable modems vs. DSL. It will depend on where you live. My area is about the have two-way cable modem ability. DSL won't work over my current phone lines. It's too far to the phone switches, and my 56k modem(I tried 3) connects at 21.6k, because of the poor line quality. I'm a cable modem candidate. ISDN will fall away as DSL rolls out, but not all at once.

The future of these technologies will depend on service and pricing, and where you live.
