I think that anyone should be able to see that when I created this thread, I made exceptions and I also did concede right from the beginning that my derision of SUVs points mainly to approximately 90% of all SUV drivers, not all. I guess the subject title "Anti- Sports- Utility Vehicle" distracts from what this thread's intention, which are to explore this seeming insanity that I witness among vehicle consumers to seek larger and heavier, longer and wider --all in the name of prestige and conquest of the road! Sorry to ruffle your feathers, Richard.
For commuting to and from Salt Lake City, a 35 mile trip, I ride a $140,000 extra large, diesel pumping, smoke- spewing road hog that seats 48, and I drive chauffeured, of course.
For most other uses, I drive a re-conditioned 1985 Mercury Topaz that still averages 42 miles/gal on the highway (at 65 mph) and about 33 miles/ gal around town.
Recently, I acquired a 1983 Dodge Ram 1 ton pick-up. I bought it from my brother who was in financial difficulty. With a little work, I got it to pass the emissions inspection and now it gets 14 mi/gal, unloaded. Circumstances brought me into owning this truck, I would not have bought one otherwise, but now that I own it, I might just keep it around. It has already come in handy to haul away some tree limbs, and will definitely be useful next week as I finish moving away to our new home where my wife is going to finish her bachelor degree.
My next vehicle purchase is definitely going to be an electric hybrid, can't yet decide between the Toyota and the Honda, just watching and waiting. |
