Science Dynamics and Lucent Technologies Team Up for Video over Frame Relay
Project for Northwest Territories Government

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Communications veteran Science
Dynamics (OTC Bulletin Board: SIDY) announces it is collaborating with telecom
giant Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) to supply the products and capability to
enable videoconferencing on a data network for Canada's Provincial Government
of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). The total value of the project will be
approximately Cdn $1.2 million (US$800,000) over the next 18 months. The
combined solutions will provide the government with a progressive
communications capability that meets the challenges of the vast geographic
expanse of Canada's northwest region.
Science Dynamics' leading VFX-250S Frame Relay Access Device will
integrate videoconferencing throughout the Government's dispersed departments
utilizing a dedicated frame relay network running over satellite
communications links. Lucent's gateway and the Polycom ViewStation V.35 group
videoconferencing system will provide GNWT with much needed real-time
multimedia communications. The ViewStation provides high-quality video and a
voice-tracking camera as a standard feature. Lucent will also supply
videoconferencing peripherals such as document cameras, scan converters,
monitors and professional services.
The project represents the first joint undertaking for Science Dynamics
and Lucent in North America. One of the key benefits of this
videoconferencing system is to offer face-to-face communications, thus reduce
the Government's burden of frequent long distance travel in a region covering
vast distances. Target conferencing applications include telemedicine,
financial forecasting, human resource planning, as well as general government
discussions.
"The new videoconferencing capability will significantly increase our
operational efficiency and reduce delays inherent in setting up conventional
meetings," said Fred Ruthven, manager of Informatics at GNWT. "There was a
cast iron business case for its deployment, and the solution offered jointly
by Lucent and Science Dynamics proved to be the most effective and economic."
Science Dynamics' VFX-250S enables the user to effectively manage the
allocation of bandwidth between real time applications (video) and non real
time applications (file transfers). The on-demand basis of this allocation of
bandwidth ensures that costly satellite links are used to their maximum
capacity without prior allocation of bandwidth for what could be unpredictable
or sporadic videoconferencing usage.
Alan Bashforth, president and CEO of Science Dynamics, stated, "Our
collaboration with Lucent provides a complete integrated solution to meet the
varied requirements of the GNWT, as well as a cost-effective communications
capability. Video over frame relay delivers flexibility so the network can
balance the use of bandwidth between applications. We are excited to be able
to work with Lucent to provide this advanced multi-service network."
The video over frame solution came to life through the efforts of a
diverse team of experts. The project brought together engineers from Lucent's
Bell Labs in New Jersey and Denver, Science Dynamics in New Jersey, and
Polycom in Austin, Texas as well as Lucent sales, technical and systems
engineering teams out of Toronto and Calgary.
"We are delighted to be involved in bringing the latest communications
solutions to the Northwest Territories," said Kenneth Barr, president of
Lucent's Business Communications Systems in Canada. "As a leader in video
conferencing solutions, Lucent is helping government and enterprise
organizations globally to expand their reach and keep step with the demands of
changing business environments."
