Challenge of Patch Drugs: Getting Under
the Skin

By ABIGAIL ZUGER

The dry, flaky outer layer of skin that covers human beings from head to toe gets very little respect: People oil it, clean it occasionally and otherwise ignore it, except when they decide to buff some of it right down the shower drain.

But to pharmacologists who would like to slip drugs painlessly into the body, that layer of skin is the biologic equivalent of Mount Everest, one of the body's most persistent challenges to scientific ingenuity.

Despite 30 years of research into the subject, fewer than a dozen drugs are available in skin patches, little discs that adhere to the skin and allow a drug to seep slowly into the bloodstream over hours or even days.

Each of them represents a hard-won triumph of ingenuity over biology -- a way to avoid the pain of needles and many of the side effects of capsules and pills.

In hindsight I have to hope that O'Shea expected a significant revenue stream to come our way to fund the glucose monitor. That we have once again failed to develop any source of revenue other than an occasional licensing fee is expected due to eliminating the sales reps. The outcome for us shareholders is that Elan now has options to control almost half of BJCT; although I understand that the strike on the options is now set at $1.50/share, which tells me the Elan group think we will pull out of this someday.....

best, art
