I'm not sure if I agree with your particular scenario. On one point, they fly 747's not 737's which have a better safety record. And on another, more important point, they are an all cargo carrier, not a passenger carrier. So if a plane were to tragically crash, only the crew would probably perish - 4 or 5 people not 300 - 400 people, that a passenger equipped 747 could hold. I have a hard time believing that the media will make a very large deal about some 'relatively' unknown aircraft crashing, as opposed to a world famous one.
Investors may react harshly, but would hopefully quickly recover. First, I do not think Atlas would be grounded like Valujet was, and second I think Atlas is in much better financial shape than TWA will ever be. So, obviously it would be bad news, but I do think Atlas would recover..
Of course I could be wrong - it wouldn't be the first time :)
