Re: As for VC SDRAM

I could have sworn I'd seen a link for somebody selling 64 meg VC DRAM modules, but I can't find it now. I've got some memory supply sources that I used for unbuffered SDRAM on the old GX boards that can build VC DIMMS for me in 3 days, but I don't really think that counts.

So unless I do find that link, I'm going to say that the PC DIMMs aren't available as standard parts yet. You can order them, and the chips themselves have been off the shelf items for many months. The three main sources for chips right now are NEC (of course, with a variety of part numbers), Hyundai, and Infineon (nee Siemans).

I do expect VC DRAM to be a force towards the end of Q4 once the KX133 chipset has been available for awhile. Don't forget - PC Rambus is entering the PC market at best a quarter ahead of VC DRAM, and this is on top of the PC133 that wasn't expected either. Rambus will be up against stronger competition than PC100 - competition unexpected a few months ago.

Rambus is entering the market two to three months ahead of its lower priced, better performing competition. It's entering a month or so behind PC133 - lower priced similar performing competition.

Hey, and I could be completely wrong about the performance, but I doubt it, the good performance numbers always seem to get leaked - it's the disasters that become life or death secrets and never see the light of day. Maybe it's different this time - we should know at the end of the month.

I still think it's all going to boil down to what Intel does - what's your expectation? Will Intel limit coppermine and timna to rambus?
