Hey Penni, I just finished reading the Time story on the Heaven's Gate folks. Some of them seemed to be asking the same questions we are but boy, did they come up with a bizarre answer. It reminded me of when I went to an EST meeting with a friend back in the 1970's. I was only 17 or so but I was interested in the "big" questions about belief and existence.
Anyway, we went to this thing, it was at a big hotel, and first there was a lecture in a big reception room. Gobbledy Gook as I recall. Then we broke into small groups, where the ESTers started to work on us. I remember them trying over and over to get me to agree with something I just couldn't agree with. Finally I was escorted out. I didn't want to leave my friend but I was literally pulled from the room. My friend joined anyway, can you believe it! She pulled a couple of our mutual friends in too, despite my efforts. All I can figure is some people need to believe a whole heck of a lot more than I do. It would be nice to have a spanking neat, comforting belief system but it ain't worth dying for. |
