HAYES BEATS U.S. ROBOTICS IN DELIVERING 56K;
Ships World's First 56 kbps PC Card Today
ATLANTA, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. today announced shipment of the world's first high-performance 56K PC Card modem to provide the fastest growing computer market segment -- laptop computer users -- with the fastest possible analog modem speed available today. The Hayes(TM) ACCURA(TM) 56K PC Card Modem, utilizing K56Flex technology, began shipping today and will be on store shelves within days.
"Mobile users are inherently some of the most efficient users of technology. They want access and they want it fast. At Hayes, we targeted mobile customers as perhaps the most anxious to receive the 56 kbps modem speed technology, and we wanted to deliver to them before any other vendor," said Joseph Formichelli, President and CEO, Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. "We accomplished that goal with a solid product which will give mobile users a significant increase in the work performance they get from their laptop. Hayes is always striving to create the virtual workplace through our communication products."
Available for the low estimated street price of US$209, ACCURA 56K PC Card Modem is a data/fax/cellular modem providing Internet and corporate LAN information downloads up to 56,000 kbps -- approaching the high-speed performance of 64K ISDN products. ACCURA 56K PC Card Modem has an energy-wise automatic idle mode for extended computer battery life, Flash ROM capability for easy software upgrades and cellular compatibility. Additional features include Hot Swapping which allows users to insert and remove the modem without rebooting, and credit card "bong" tone detection.
Hayes is a founding member of the Open 56K Forum, an expanding group of influential communications and computer industry leaders committed to promoting a standard interoperable protocol for 56K products for the benefit of end users and the data communications market. Once a standard is reached by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), all Hayes 56K modems will be upgradeable to the standard at no cost to the consumer.
Hayes' high-speed 56 kbps modems essentially double the speed of downloading information from the Internet. Making the leap to 56 kbps is different from past speed increases because the modem is taking advantage of the high-speed, digital connection to the telephone network that Internet service providers and corporations already have.
Hayes also announces shipment today of both the ACCURA(TM) 336 V.34 + Ethernet PC Card and the ACCURA 336 V.34 + Fax PC Card at a lower cost than the competition.
The ACCURA 336 + Fax PC Card provides affordable performance and compatibility. Now mobile computing professionals can enjoy all the power of a desktop in a pocket-size package.
The ACCURA 336 Ethernet Combo Card provides the same functionality as the ACCURA 336 + Fax PC Card combined with the convenience of a high-performance Ethernet network interface -- one single solution for both internal network communications and external telecommunications.
Both the ACCURA 336 Ethernet Combo Card and the ACCURA 336 + Fax PC Card are Flash ROM upgradeable which makes adding new features a snap. Both products have a power smart feature which automatically conserves battery life, an auto-idle mode which detects when the modem is idle and enters sleep mode and Plug-and-Play support to allow quick and easy installation.
Both the ACCURA 336 Ethernet Combo Card and the ACCURA 336 + Fax PC Card come with Hayes' award-winning Bonus Bundle(TM) and Hayes(TM) Smartcom(TM) Message Center which turns a laptop into a sophisticated communications tool. The Hayes Bonus Bundle includes free software, memberships and connect time from popular online services like America Online and CompuServe.
The ACCURA 336 Ethernet Combo Card provides cross platform driver support for a variety of leading network operating systems including the following: NetWare Client, Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows for Workgroups, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES and LANtastic.
The ACCURA 336 Ethernet Combo Card sells for an estimated street price of US$299 and comes with a two-year limited warranty which can be extended to a total of three years if the purchaser registers the modem within 90 days. The ACCURA 336 + Fax PC Card sells for an estimated street price of $179 and comes with a two-year limited warranty which can be extended to a total of five years.
