Interesting idea for a thread
This my view of the internet's leading companies
ISP - AOL so dominant it scary, MSFT
DSL Equipment - PDYN - facing copper mountain competition
CABLE broadband - ATHM - Is any one even starting yet?
Wireless Broadband - Hughes Electronics - so expensive hard to be profitable
Internet Brokers - Schwab, EGRP
Internet Banks - no clear leader
Internet Medical - KOOP, HLTH, ONHN
Internet Law/legal - no one
Internet Taxes - no one
Internet Auctions - EBAY, AMZN, UBID
Internet Retail - AMZN
Internet Networks - CSCO
Internet Software - ORCL
Internet Stock Information - HOOV, Street.com
Internet Insurance - INSW, QUOT
Internet Advertising - ???
Internet Advertising monitoring - MMXI, Nielsen's, PCDATA
Internet Sports programming - QUOK, ESPN

I think if we identify the dominant players in each sector, then the long term plays are more apparent. Hindsight showed that EBAY, AMZN, and AOL were leaders in their sector. Motley Fool picked AOL in 1994 when I thought it was overvalued, too many competitiors, and not profitable.
