>>But can I run my complex portfolio tracking Excel spreadsheet, edit my real estate contract in Word while I'm browsing a DHTML site?<<

Ahh, that's the rub! Software compatibility.
There are several word processors that have good import/export for Word. Check out abisoft, wordperfect, staroffice, or applix. 3 or the 4 are free for personal use. Gnumeric is coming along nicely in it's Excel filters (http://www.gnome.org/gnumeric/). You can extend it with Python or Perl to do just about any portfolio calculations that may not be covered by your normal spreadsheet functions.

Admittedly, these packages may not be suitable for everyone. But it is nice to have the option. :-)

You have some nice DHTML sites that you want to point out that are worthwhile and can be viewed with a browser that hasn't been upgraded in 232 days? I have a feeling that your next Office/Explorer upgrade will cause a reboot, where my upgrades just happen transparently. :)
