Check out abisoft, wordperfect, staroffice, or applix. 3 or the 4 are free for personal use.

So. Did you ever trying using any of these. I have tried one of these free WP packages off the web. I was still in my old habit of not wanting to "buy" Office. I don't think MSFT has anything to worry about. I bet their focus is to keep getting people trained in Office at work and home. The tendency to learn a new product (which would not be as good) is not there. Time is money---even in buying for home use. Corporations would not dream of putting these other WPs to use. Of course there is always a few exceptions who will be switching to Office eventually.
One would rather stick with familiar packages especially if they it the best.
That is why i decided to just go out and buy Office.

I think you are overestimating the threat MSFT would face from any of these. It is almost non-existent.
