In my experience as long as those 14 minute waits are not widespread over say 2-3 months then the market won't hear anything about such "problems". It would be considered good that they are growing and have these problems in the first place. Now I repeat, as long as it doesn't last long.

DELL is selling $30 million/day on the internet. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that reps are asking if the prospective customer went to buy online. It is a nice thing to ask sometimes for customers who do not want their hand held. It all depends on how the question is raised though. I am sure you could have gotten the monitor off the configuration. Maybe the rep was "green". If it can be done on their web site, their reps should be able to do it over the phone.

Yes, DELL is more expensive sometimes than a Compaq, but with all price wars, it ebbs and flows. Compaq is in more dire straits these days so I wouldn't be surprised if they are cheaper across the board. That is good for consumers, bad for Compaq. On the other hand though I have seen Compaq systems come DOA, or fail within a month when purchaed at the store way too many times than I would expect considering their competition. 3-5 times over 3 months is too many to me - just to give you an idea.

I get the impression from you that you want you hand held and want support close to home at a retail outlet. DELL would be a stretch for you then, even though they have local support all over anyway.

I'm actually neutral on DELL or Compaq though. I am a power user and can hold my own on either system. I do use a DELL Pentium Pro 200 and haven't had a major issue with it in close to 3 years owning it. I've entertained more Compaq system quotes than DELL as of late though.
