CIBC becomes VeriSign certificate authority for Canada

Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce will issue digital certificates to

Canadian businesses and consumers

TORONTO, Aug. 18 /CNW/ - CIBC and VeriSign, Inc. the world's
leading provider of Internet-based trust services, today announced that
CIBC will become the preferred financial services affiliate for VeriSign in
Canada. CIBC will provide the full spectrum of digital certificate trust
services -- including registration, authentication and issuance, as well as
customer service and processing services for Canadian companies,
websites and individuals.

Digital certificates are becoming the standard e-commerce security
product of the future,'' said Brian Cassidy, senior executive vice president
for CIBC. We've been providing Canadians with the ability to conduct
private and secure financial transactions for 130 years and we see
Internet trust services using digital certificates as a logical extension of our
service offering. The affiliation with VeriSign allows us to invest in the
future of e-commerce while enabling more Canadian companies and
individuals to conduct secure e-commerce transactions with confidence.''

VeriSign affiliates are a global network of trusted e-commerce providers,
operating under a common infrastructure to deliver secured digital
certificate services. Affiliates provide their customers with localized
Internet trust services as well as customer service, systems integration
and liability warranties in their own language, currency and legal system.
CIBC will operate a VeriSign processing centre to provide nationwide
certificate-authority services, deliver certificate-transaction processing, as
well as sales, marketing, security, customer support, and operations
management. The processing centre will incorporate VeriSign's PKI
(public key infrastructure) platform, trust services infrastructure and
business readiness services to ensure uniform global operational and trust
practices.

Initially, CIBC VeriSign will provide two primary services:

- Webserver certificates that authenticate a company's identity for its
website customers and provide secure encryption of information;

- Enterprise certificate services that allow companies to customize and
brand digital ID's to control access to company intranets and extranets,
provide secure e-messaging, and use highly secure virtual private
networks;

- Consumer certificate services will later be added to meet market
demand.

We're very excited to have CIBC on board as our Preferred VeriSign
Financial Affiliate in Canada. The partnership will bring much needed
Internet trust services to businesses and individuals, and build on CIBC's
already highly successful deployment of online financial services for
consumers and businesses,'' said Richard Yanowitch, executive vice
president of marketing for VeriSign. We look forward to working with
CIBC as they continue to bring innovative solutions to the online
community.''

VeriSign Global Affiliate Services

VeriSign's Affiliate services have been designed to serve the needs of
major service providers with extremely high-volume digital certificate
issuance requirements. These include electronic commerce service
providers that establish themselves as large scale national or international
Certificate Authorities (CAs); Internet Service Providers or Web hosting
companies which deliver connectivity and other value added services to a
range of business and consumer customers; and transactions processors,
financial services providers, professional-services firms, and other entities
that operate Internet-based communities of interest (such as Web
portals). These Affiliates typically offer digital certificate services to their
customers either under their own brand, the VeriSign brand, or within a
co-branded certificate hierarchy. In many cases, the certificate services
are integrated with other value-added services offered by the provider.

VeriSign's Affiliate Services are based on the company's proven and
scalable WorldTrust technology architecture which, along with
comprehensive operational support, trust practices and marketing
