Talk about starting a language war!

As the author of a few hundred thousand lines of COBOL over the years, and someone who used it in the "old days", I continue to rate COBOL A+. I wouldn't do a project in it now, but given its history I think you can't argue with success: COBOL was, for a long time, the absolute best language for commercial applications development.

Another little tip: There are a lot of COBOL programmers out there today making more than a good C++ guy (with the Y2K maintenance). I couple of years ago, I taught a college COBOL course -- right off the bat, I recommended the students go drop COBOL and add Database Systems, which I was also teaching. COBOL was required, so they didn't -- but some may have been pissed if they had followed my advice!
