Siemens to supply ADSL technology to XinJiang PTA in China

For the trade press

Siemens has been awarded a contract by XinJiang PTA in China to supply ADSL subscriber access technology. Thanks to the ADSL network, XinJiang PTA (post and telecommunications department in XinJiang, western China) will be able to offer numerous multimedia services like fast Internet access, high-quality videoconferencing, telemedicine, telelearning and video-on-demand (VoD). The first phase of setting up the network, which covers 15 central offices, will start in November 1999. Siemens is supplying its XpressLink DSLAMs and the ADSL SpeedStream 3041 network adaptor cards for connecting broadband users (CPE, Customer Premises Equipment) from Efficient Networks.

Siemens is supplying the ADSL connection technology as part of the contract to set up an ATM network for the XinJiang region. Quick response to customer inquiries and highquality futureproof solutions were key for this contract. It is estimated that the world market for ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Llne) will reach a global volume of over ten billion US dollars in the next five years. XpressLink is the Siemens product for Central Offices (CO). The DSLAM solution (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) supports ADSL user interfaces for up to 8 Mbit/s downstream over existing copper telephone cable. With Speedstream 3041, Efficient Networks is supplying the ADSL NIC (Network Interface Card), a cost-effective solution for connecting subscribers, where the modem card can be plugged directly into the PC. Siemens has taken share in Efficient Networks last year.
