Eric, The 80 million number is AIM + ICQ, not just AIM. Also, I suspect you're right - a lot of those 80 million users are probably inactive. It'd be very interesting to see how many users have been active in the last 30/60/90 days...

When i was downloading realplayer, i got this AIM tagging along. I have never used it.
I guess the longer a product is "out there", the greater the total numbers --which will include large inactive ones.

Maybe the WebTV deal with RealPlayer was MSFT's plan to also get on the good side of Real and possibly work out a deal to offer their products (like IM) as free downloads. You never know!!
