[siemens xdsl]

hi darrell,

(x)dsl for siemens means many things depending on which letter is substituted for "x" ... ;) and also whether it's systems or silicon ... .. kinda convoluted - fwiw best i've been able to piece it together (haven't checked hdsl/sdsl for a while):

siemens seems to be using txn adsl silicon now, and partnered with ecil to grow their own adsl silicon, believe it's adtran(?) for hdsl2/sdsl(?) silicon, and they're under agreement to use orct/harris silicon for vdsl, but at the same time they have invested in another israeli co. savan who is developing vdsl silicon... and orct and fujitsu seem to be cozying up together for vdsl systems..
---

don't think this particular siemens' announcement will have much of an impact on orct/fujitsu as it is about a g.lite central office switch card ... a product which orct/fujitsu doesn't seem particularly interested in chasing and it is g.lite adsl..

and siemens has been working on their own adsl all along..

for a while back in late '97/ early '98, thought that there was potential for the orct/siemens vdsl relationship to be extended to adsl... but that has never developed to my knowledge...

for adsl, siemens is definitely a competitor for orct/fujitsu, tho for pc's in europe fujitsu and siemens have a joint deal... fujitsu and siemens go way way back together to the '20's when fujitsu was spun off from furukawa electric.. fujitsu's major initial products were switches built using licensed siemens technology...

it will be interesting to see how the fujitsu/siemens computer venture handles adsl cpe ... wouldn't be at all surprised if a third party like intc becomes involved..

altho siemens has been working on adsl for some time, they seem to be having their problems... for the dt deployment they only got 10% or so, with orct/fujitsu taking 50% and eci getting 40%... don't know if you saw the recent globes article on eci... globes noted that orct is the only vendor currently shipping... interesting reading.. link that i'd saved has now either been changed or is gone- the relevant quote:

..."ECI's biggest problem is that, whenever they get into a new sector, they do it too late. The latest example is the fast modem market (ADSL). Orckit's products hit the market in early 1998. ECI, on the other hand, has yet to sell a single product, despite repeated announcements of its imminent entry into the ADSL sector.

"Last year, ECI and Orckit won most of Deutsche Telekom's important ADSL tender (Orckit - 50%, and ECI 40%). Yet so far Orckit is the only one to have sold systems to Deutsche Telekom. ECI hasn't sold anything to the German company, for the simple reason that it has not yet released its product on the market..."

also in the recent dataquest adsl report for europe, siemens isn't listed among the top three: it's alcatel #1; orct #2; ericsson #3: for cpe, co, and revenue..

siemens is developing their own adsl silicon, rumored together with eci ... sure looks like a key chip in the adsl chipset-the digital data pump PEB 22712, has been delayed... now showing product availability q2/00 ... (in oct 98 date was q2 99)

until eci and siemens get the kinks out would expect them to continue to use txn ... txn's new chipset (ADSL over ISDN capable) is due in volume "later in the third quarter of 1999..." so the schedule (kinda) fits the globe's comment that eci will be shipping to dt in september
