NEC's new optical-disc digital video recorder out in Sept.

JAPAN — September 21 is the scheduled launch date of NEC Corp.'s new optical-disc digital video recorder called the GigaStation.

The GigaStation uses rewritable discs called Multimedia Video Discs (MVDISC), which are 120mm in diameter and hold two hours worth of recording each in standard mode with picture quality similar to the S-VHS format. In extended mode, the disc holds up to four hours of recording and in fine mode, an hour. Audio and video images are stored in MPEG-1 Layer 2 standard and MPEG-2 standard, respectively. NEC says that it is planning on marketing a recording media with a storage capacity of 10.4G for both sides within the year.

NEC has used new technology to increase the overwrite cyclability of optical discs. The drive automatically searches for a space on an optical disc so that overwriting previously recorded contents can be avoided.

The GigaStation can identify the optimum compression mode based on both the recording time selected by the user and the disc's available space. Some models of video recorders conforming to the VHS format have a function to shift a 3x speed while recording. The GigaStation, on the other hand, uses a variable-bit-rate compression encoder that enables it to choose the most suitable rate between 2.7Mbps to 5.5Mbps. Therefore, it can keep the same rate during recording.

There are four input and two output connectors for separate/analog composites and one set of input and output connectors for digital video. The GigaStation can also edit images, when connected to a VCR, a video camera and a personal computer.
