When startup costs are next to nothing, why not? Unlike the real world businesses, most of these new companies are just offering free services which cost them close to nothing to produce/operate. How many free-email or calendar websites do we need? How many need to be public companies?

The only way these companies can spend cash is through advertising. Basically buying banners on other websites, or buying billboards on highway 101 in the valley. That, and huge salaries for execs. Oh, and if they're etailers, by giving away dollar bills for 90 cents..
