Czech Tender for 3rd GSM Mobile Operator Attracts 8 Bidders


Prague, Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Eight groups have submitted a bid for a 1 billion koruna ($29.1 million) GSM mobile phone license in the Czech Republic, the nation's third, by the deadline yesterday, the Czech daily Mlada Fronta Dnes reported. The bidders include Orange Plc, the U.K.'s third-biggest mobile phone company, which is bidding with GiTy, a Czech phone company; a venture of Czech telecom company Aliatel with Norway's Telenor A/S; Canada's Telesystem International Wireless with Czech bank Investicni a Postovni Banka AS; France's Vivendi SA bidding with Germany's and Italy's No. 2 phone company Mannesmann AG; British Telecommunications Plc bidding with Czech information technology company Telekomunikacni Montaze Praha AS; France Telecom SA bidding with Czech Republic's biggest media and entertainment company Bonton AS; Telekom Austria AG' bidding with Telecom Italia Mobile SpA and two Czech partners; and Vodafone Airtouch Plc, the world's largest provider of wireless phone services, bidding with GTS CzechNet. Analysts expect the winner probably won't be able to start operating by the end of the year and likely will begin in the first quarter next year, the paper said.

The license is scheduled to be awarded by the end of next month and the winner is expected to invest about $250 million in the Czech Republic, according to an estimate by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
