NYRR featured in magazine article - Progressive Railroading, August 1999 "Short-Line Snapshots". The title for the NYRR article "Tugging at the Top Line." Transporting rail cars on tug-propelled car floats, the Cross Harbor - the only cross-harbor, rail-freight marine operation in the Northeast - has laid a framework that puts the railway in position to thrive in the competitive New York City freight transport market. "We have experienced growth in virtually all sectors of our rail business" says Robert Bentley, president of New York Regional Rail Corp., the Cross Harbor parent. Cross Harbor officials have been champing at the bit to post this kind of progress. They've also spent a lot over the past couple of years preparing for the Conrail carve-up. In May, the Cross Harbor inked an agreement with Norfolk Southern Railway to give NS exclusive access to the Cross Harbor's Bush Terminal Rail Yard in Brooklyn. Since then, the Cross Harbor has agreed to handle CSX Transportation traffic bound for New York and is negotiating with Canadian Pacific Railway to secure additional regional business. The Cross Harbor also connects with the New York & Atlantic Railway Co., a 269-mile line that runs from Fresh Pond, N.Y. to the east of Long Island - a connection Cross Harbor officials believe will lead to new business. Bentley goes on to note that Cross Harbor is handling tangible increases in rail-car traffic. The article notes that the traffic increase is creating a need for additional employees. The insert notes that Cross Harbor handles passenger coaches for the Long Island Rail Road and transports New York City Transit Authority subway cars.
