This first quarter "is shaping up according to Street expectations," said Punk Ziegel & Co. analyst Gary Abbott. He said he spoke to the company last Friday and got the impression that the quarter "is shaping up like they suggested" after reporting fourth-quarter results.

"This is going to be a real important quarter for them," Abbott said, noting that it will indicate which quarter was an anomaly - the third or the fourth.

Oracle has a lot of things working in its favor. It has a booming business in customer relationship management and strategic procurement - two of the hottest areas in enterprise software. Its aggressive marketing of its Internet strategy appears to be winning on the public relations front.

Oracle has typically retooled its sales force in the first quarter. This time, Oracle accomplished much of the reorganization earlier than usual, which should give the company "more selling days and less distraction," Abbott said.
