AMD current customers for the Athlon are still mainly gamers and home users, the current prices of Athlon is anything but cheap. Also at the present time the mother boards cost an extra $100 or so which adds to the total system cost.

I agree with you however that from a consumer point of view, Athlon represent the better value compared to PIII. Higher performance at about the same price.
