Giant oil fire threatens environmental disaster in quake-hit Turkey

IZMIT, Turkey (AP-CP) - Inky black smoke from a blazing oil refinery soared into the sky like a funeral pyre Wednesday, the result of a devastating earthquake that has claimed nearly 3,900 lives, left wide sections of western Turkey in ruins and threatens to derail its already-struggling economy. The inferno at the Tupras refinery was the latest disaster linked to the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the highly populated region before dawn Tuesday.

World rushes to help Turkish quake victims
Many countries rushed to aid Turkey on Wednesday, sending teams with sophisticated search equipment and dogs to sniff out survivors, as well as money to help relief efforts. Prime Minister Jean Chretien said Canada plans to send 200 soldiers to help. International Co-operation Minister Maria Minna said Tuesday that Canada is sending humanitarian assistance to Turkey.
